John McCain (born August 29, 1936 in Panama Canal Zone) is a United States Senator from Arizona. McCain's father and grandfather served in the U.S. Navy. McCain went to the U.S. Naval Academy and later served during the Vietnam War. His plane was shot down. He was captured by the Viet Cong, a name given to the North Vietnamese military who finally took over the entire country. While captured, he was called a "POW" (Prisoner of War). He was held in prison for several years and tortured, resulting in long-term physical disabilities. Later, he became a U.S. Senator. He tried to get the Republican Party to choose him to be their candidate for President of the United States before, but George W. Bush got it. In 2008 the Republican Party has chosen him for their Presidental Candidate.
